MAN-MACHINE SYSTEMS DESIGN AND EVALUATION
What is it?
Literally, the term "man-machine system" means a machine and a human who operates it constitute a system. Have you ever seen the picture of a main control room (MCR) of a nuclear power plant? It has thousands of dispalys and controls each of which indicates critical parameter information of the plant operation. This may be one of the most complex examples of man-machine systems. Now, how to design a display so that it does not cause the cognitive overload of MCR operators? How to make the displays and controls which conform to the task requirements? Efforts have been made so far to answer these questions.
What I've done and learned so far?
Here follows a list of research projects that I've been leading or involved in so far regarding this topic:
  1. Development of a framework for evaluating perceived image quality of a monitor, LG Electronics Co., 1998. 8 ~ 1999. 1
  2. Development of a usability evaluation method for the CFMS user interface of UCN 3,4, KAERI, 1996. 4 ~ 1996. 11
  3. Human factors design and evaluation of the main control room of atomic power plants using VDT, KAERI, 1994. 7 ~ 1996. 7
  4. Improvement of KO4 inspection process, Samsung Coning Co., Ltd., 1994.6~1995.6
  5. An ergonomic coach interior design for the Korean High Speed Rail, Korean High Speed Rail Construction Authority, 1992. 4 ~ 1992. 12
